National school games: Butere thrash Nginda as Kisumu Day humble Waberi in Kakamega

Football girls’ teams extended the goal-scoring spree to the second day of Airtel Rising Stars National Secondary School Championships at Kakamega High Wednesday.

Butere of Nzoia region were yet again in scoring mood after they humiliated Nginda of Aberdare 8-0 in a one-side but entertaining Pool ‘B’ match to advance to the semis.

Matchmaker Narjolene Nekesa scored four goals to bring her tally to eight after two matches.

Nekesa scored same number in the Butere 7-0 annihilation of Gekomoni in their first match.

In the match against Nginda, Butere who are among the favourites scored other goals through Valentine Ayidi who has already landed a sports scholarship at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology recording a hat-trick while Esther Mmbone added one goal.

Nekesa said: “I look forward to win the golden boot and also help my team to lift the trophy.”

On how she perfects her striking skills, Nekesa said: “I train hard to perfect one-on-one skills and how to make fast runs inside the box.”

Mwahamisi Jereko proved why she went for Manchester United Soccer Clinic after she scored four goals to help St John’s Kaloleni beat hapless Gekomoni of the Lake 6-0 in other Pool ‘B’ match and join Butere in the semis, also with one match to the end of preliminaries.

Nuru Mustafa added two goals for Kaloleni who are appearing in the Nationals for their second straight year.

Butere play Kaloleni today in a key match that would decide the group winners and runners-up.

Winless Nginda and Gekomoni will be chasing their maiden win when they clash in a formality match of the Pool ‘B’.

In Pool ‘A’, East African champions Tartar of Nzoia hit Matuu Memorial of Metropolitan 4-0 to record their second victory of the tournament and be assured of a semi-final slot.

Nancy Cherotich scored a hat-trick for Tartar to bring her tally to eight.

Robai Kebedi added one goal for Tartar to send Matuu packng out of the contest.

After losing 10-0 against Tartar in their first match, Ntunene salvaged some pride after they held pre-match favourites Moi Girls Kapcherop to a barren draw in other Pool ‘A’ match.

Tartar play Kapcherop in a match that will determine the pool winners and runners-up today.

Gekomoni and Nginda play their last match Thursday.

The girls’ matches here have recorded the highest number of goals ever witnessed in the games in recent years.

The opening day saw 27 goals being scored by four winning teams. Tartar beat Ntunene 10-0, Kapcherop hit Matuu 3-0, Butere overcame Gekomoni 7-0 while Kaloleni hit Nginda 7-0.

In boys’ category, Passenga beat Green Palm 3-0 while Kisumu Day defeated Waberi of Garissa 5-0 in Pool ‘B’ matches. Preliminary round is scheduled to end today.
