Kerugoya beat Kakungulu as Buru Buru edge Buddo

Lira, Uganda: Kenyan teams started off well on the second day of the Brookside East African Secondary School Games at Lango College in Lira, Uganda.

Hockey girls’ defending champions Kerugoya sent strong signals of their intent to retain the trophy after they walloped Kakungulu Memorial of Uganda 7-0 in a Pool “A” match at Lango College on Monday.

Captain Everline Njogu converted two penalty corners while Aphline Odhiambo, Rachel Njogu, Rehab Nuthe and Brenda Wanjala scored for the winners who also benefited from an own goal by Kakungulu.

Volleyball teams led by national champions Hospital Hill (boys) and Kwanthanze (girls) won all their matches.

In girls’ category, Kwanthanze defeated Umbili of South Sudan in 3-0 straight sets of 25-6, 25-11, 25-21 while AIC Kosirai rallied from one set deficit to beat St Joseph Kabgayi of Rwanda 3-0 (23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-17) in Pool “A” matches.

Former champions Lugulu also won their opening match after they defeated Lyce Technique St Luc of Burundi 3-0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-8) in a Pool “B” fixture.

In boys’ category, Malava overcame Lycee de Nyanza of Rwanda 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-21). Hospital Hill, who are national champions defeated Wav Complex of South Sudan 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-12) in a Pool “B” encounter to keep Kenya’s record clean in the discipline.

Kenyan teams also performed well in basketball with Shimba Hills, Buru Buru and Upper Hill boys winning respective matches.

In girls’ category, Buru Buru beat hosts Buddo 54-41 in a Pool “A” match as Shimba Hills trounced another Ugandan side Ndejje 67-32 in Pool “B”.

Upper Hill was also in bullish mood after they beat Haile Selassie of Tanzania 65-32 in Pool “A” fixture.

Debutants Makongeni made memorable entry into the tournament after they beat Lakes College of Burundi 23-21 in their first match of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Brookside Diary, who have a branch in Kampala, are sponsoring the games to the tune of Sh20 million.

Brookside Marketing Manager Peter Wasonga said the funds will cover the cost of administration, title sponsorship, kitting, provision of games trophies and certificates.

In addition, the title sponsors have renovated basketball courts for Lango College and provided goal pads for rugby.
