Homeboyz beat Kenya Harlequin in Dala Sevens final

Charles Omondi scored a brace of tries as Homeboyz RFC thrashed Kenya Harlequin 48-5 to lift the Dala Sevens title, the fourth leg of the National Sevens Series, at the ASK Mamboleo grounds yesterday.

It was sweet revenge for the deejays, who have also cemented their place at the top of the series table with two legs to go, after losing 19-14 to Quins in last month’s Driftwood Sevens final in Mombasa.

This was just after they had lost to Impala in the Kabeberi Sevens.

Homeboyz coach Simon Odongo couldn’t hide his joy, heaping praise on his players for a brilliant performance in their second Cup victory after their Prinsloo triumph.

“We played Quins in Mombasa and lost to them, but coming here our target was to win the Cup and extend our stay at the top. It was a great bounce back and sweet revenge. I am proud of my players’ performance,” said an elated Odongo.

The deejays showed intent from kick-off with Alvin Otieno offloading to Omondi for the opening try that was successfully converted by Mike Wanjala.

Kenyan international Bush Mwale doubled the lead, with Leonard Mugaisi adding the extras for a 14-0 lead.

Omondi then powered his way over the chalk for his brace before Cyprian Kuto grounded a fourth converted for Homeboyz to go 26-0 up.

Kevin Keegan pulled an unconverted try for the Ngong Road-based side to make the scores 26-5 at the interval. Otieno powered past Eric Shikuku to ground the fifth try for Homeboyz before Max Kang’eri touched down.

Kevin Masai capitalised on numerical advantage to hit the final nail in Quins’ coffin after Herman Humwa was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle on Mugaisi.

On their way to the final, Homeboyz stunned Kabras Sugar 29-14 as Quins overcame Strathmore 17-0.

Kabras went on to beat Strathmore 24-22 in the third place playoff as Kenya Commercial Bank claimed the Plate after humiliating Impala 31-5.

Jone Navuso, Philip Wokorach and Jone Kubu scored tries for the millers with Brian Bango (brace) and Elton Isiaho grounding Strathmore tries.
