Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai has failed to take a plea after he was arraigned at the Kajiado Law Courts on Wednesday, July 5.

Mbai was presented in court where he was charged with an assault offense, after allegedly attacking an employee of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

The lawmaker was arrested on Tuesday evening and taken to Kitengela Police Station where he spent the night after he was captured on camera assaulting a Kenya Power staff.

Kitengela-based police officers who raided his home also arrested two of the MP’s aides.

Trouble started after KPLC workers discovered that the MP’s home had illegal power connections. During the exercise conducted by officials, equipment belonging to the utility firm was recovered from the home under construction. Some of the items recovered included cables and a meter box.

Isinya Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Benjamin Ndubai on Wednesday told The Standard that the assaulted KPLC engineer had filed a report at their station.

He said apart from the assault, the MP also faces investigations over the misuse of his firearm as he was filmed attempting to reach for his gun.

The incident provoked Kenya Power workers in Kitengela town to organize a peaceful demonstration.

Waving twigs and placards, the more than a hundred employees walked from their offices to the Kitengela Police Station where they demanded justice for their colleague.

“We want justice to be done without compromise. Eng Onkangi must get justice,'' said Musa Matanono, an employee of Kenya Power.
