Three bodies recovered in a Nandi County river

Residents of Chesumei, Nandi County, woke up to a sorrowful after they recovered three unknown bodies in Kimondi River. The residents were on a mission to retrieve the body of middle-aged man alleged to have committed suicide in the river.

The bodies, retrieved in a stretch of one kilometre apart in the river and yet to be identified, are suspected to be of boda boda operators who may have died outside the county.

Police said two of the bodies were dismembered while the other was found stashed in a sack. According to the officers, the three may have been killed in either Kakamega or Vihiga counties before the killers dumped them in the river to conceal evidence.

Elsewhere, locals recovered another body at a river in Chesumei. The locals too were in a mission to find the body of another unknown man who committed suicide on Friday, last week.

According to the eyewitness, the deceased was seen walking along Kapsabet-Kakamega road before jumping into the Kimondo river.

“I raised alarm after witnessed the incident and my neighbours came and attempted to rescue the deceased but it was futile. It was until Sunday morning when the police from Chemundu Police Station commenced the operation to recover the body,” Richard Chahilu, a local told the Standard.

During the search hundreds of locals who had thronged the scene of the incident were shocked when divers from the area stumbled on three unidentified bodies.

Chesumei Sub County Police Commander Omukolongolo Bosita said the bodies were mutilated and had signs of torture.

“We don’t have reports of missing persons in our station [but] we suspect the victims could be hailing from the neighbouring counties like Kakamega or Vihiga where they have experienced insecurity,” said Bosita.

He added, “The dead bodies have been taken to Kapsabet Mortuary waiting for identification and postmortem.”

Kiptuiya Ward MCA Geoffrey Kevolwe called on police to tame rising insecurity in the area and noted that there has been an increase in recovery of bodies along the river.

“We have realised that thugs kill innocent people and transport them to this destination. Police should conduct thorough investigations and unravel those behind the gruesome killings,” he said.
