NEMA moves with speed to stop raw sewer menace in Kitengela

The National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) has sent its inspectors on a major crackdown on rental flats within New Valley Kitengela estate following complaints that some landlords were discharging raw sewerage in public spaces.

Nema Director-General Mamo B Mamo warned that it was an environmental disaster in waiting.

Agitated residents of New Valley Kitengela have been protesting against the discharge of sewage on open spaces.

They accused the landlords of bribing public health officials. The foul-smelling sewer water flows in the open into the New Valley River which drains ito the Athi River. “This is an environmental disaster and health hazard that puts hundreds of lives to risk. We cannot tolerate it,” Mamo said in Kitengela recently when he led a team to inspect sewer lines that discharged sewage on Balozi Road.

Meanwhile, residents of Ongata Rongai are demanding a special probe of contractors for shoddy works on roads in the area.

They want the contractor of Nazarene road arrested. ‘’This is unbelievable, this road was just done recently,’’ said Peter Mugambi, a resident.
