Concern over highway robbery cases

Naivasha, Kenya: Police in Naivasha have expressed their concern over the spate of robberies where drivers are loosing their cargo in unclear circumstances in the last one month.

This came as a driver ferrying hardwood timber from Congo to Nairobi was attacked along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road and the cargo worth over Sh7m stolen.

The incident came barely a week after another driver was robbed alcohol worth an estimated Sh3m on the same road.

A senior police officer who declined to be named said that they were investigating if the drivers were working with highway robbers to 'steal' the cargo.

"We have seen a trend where drivers are allegedly blocked by a white vehicle and the cargo loaded into a waiting lorry," said the officer.

In the latest incident, a driver and his conductor were attacked by suspected highway robbers who carted away the timber.

"The two claim that they were attacked early in the morning after spending the night in Naivasha and the thugs escaped with the timber," he said.

The police source said that the empty truck was found dumped by the roadside near Limuru town adding the driver and his conductor were been interrogated
