Michael Oliver details his best refereeing decision - which went against Man United

Michael Oliver has rated the decision to give Chelsea a penalty in the FA Cup final against Manchester United as one of his best calls.

The referee blew up after 20 minutes having decided that Phil Jones had fouled Eden Hazard.

The Belgian stepped up and converted what would go on to be the winner after 22 minutes in the 2018 Final.

It shone further light on Oliver's decision to give Chelsea the opportunity, but he is convinced he made the right call.

Officials only get one chance to referee the FA Cup final at Wembley and getting such a crucial decision right made the occasion all the more special.

Oliver told the Daily Mail when asked about his best calls: "I refereed the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Chelsea in 2018.

"It is still the single biggest domestic cup game in the world and it finished 1-0 to Chelsea, who won the match with a penalty that I gave when Phil Jones bought down Eden Hazard.

"It was the right FA Cup final with VAR but the only goal came from something that I have myself with no intervention and which was proved correct.

"You only referee the Cup final once. It helped to make it a good weekend."

The game would turn out to be Antonio Conte's last in charge of Chelsea as he was axed later that summer.

It remains the only cup final Jose Mourinho has ever lost in England.

After the game the Portuguese boss felt his side didn't deserve to lose the showpiece game but expressed no issues with the penalty decision.

Oliver though did confess to getting a decision horribly wrong earlier in his career.

As he pushed to be a top flight ref he took charge of a Championship game between Birmingham and Plymouth in 2009.

He sent the Blues goalkeeper off and gave a penalty after 20 minutes despite later accepting that no foul had occurred and the alleged offence was outside the box.
