The award, officially gazetted on Mashujaa Day, recognised Raila's lifelong service, immense sacrifice, and enduring contribution to the country's democracy. It also served as a unifying moment, celebrating a man whose legacy continues to shape Kenya's political and social fabric. "It is the reason on this Mashujaa Day, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution and enduring legacy, the government and the people of Kenya inscribe Raila Odinga's name among the foremost of our heroes under the public seal of the Republic of Kenya," President Ruto declared to applause from the crowd. What is the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (CGH)? According to the official presidential website (president.go.ke), the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya is typically awarded to the incumbent president and all former presidents during their tenure. It is the highest rank within Kenya's national honours system, representing the utmost recognition of service, leadership, and patriotism. Past Kenyan recipients include Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta, and now William Ruto. However, the award has also been conferred upon distinguished international leaders and global figures whose work has benefited Kenya or humanity at large. Among them are Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Aga Khan IV, Aga Khan V, former New Zealand Prime Minister Mike Moore, Saudi Prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, and Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin. Kenya's system of National Honours The Order of the Golden Heart of the Republic of Kenya was introduced in 1966 by founding President Jomo Kenyatta. It has three distinct classes: Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (CGH)-awarded for exemplary leadership and service of the highest order. Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH)-typically given to senior leaders, cabinet secretaries, judges, and top public servants. Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (MGH)-awarded to Kenyans who have served exceptionally in their fields or professions. In recent years, notable recipients of the E.G.H. include Eliud Kipchoge, who was honoured after running a sub-two-hour marathon in Vienna, Austria, a record-breaking feat that inspired millions around the world. The process of selecting honourees is coordinated by the National Honours and Awards Committee based in the Office of the President. The committee recommends individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service, courage, or innovation in their respective fields. The president then makes the final approval. Interestingly, the national honours system has its roots in colonial-era traditions, where similar awards were conferred by the British monarchy. After independence, Kenya adopted and localised the honours, making the President the official awarding authority.
