Mike Mbuvi Sonko rode into City politics on the doorstep of a matatu emblazoned with graffiti and blaring with loud music in a tumultuous run that swept him into the Governor’s office like a hurricane, only to end in handcuffs on a dusty airstrip in Voi.
His deputy, Polycarp Igathe, the bespectacled corporate hack who was meant to bring the smarts, quit in a huff barely months after assuming office as Sonko’s reign veered dangerously like a matatu whose inept driver had long-lost hold. In his last months in office, having fallen out of favour with President Uhuru and the residents he led, he had slinked out of Nairobi to seek refuge in his Mua Hills residence in Machakos County as his City, East Africa’s largest metropolis, sunk into rot.
