Nyeri MPs issue notice of motion to discuss the conduct of Aden Duale

NAIROBI: The stage is set for a major political battle within Jubilee after eight lawmakers from Nyeri County issued notice for a motion to censure Garissa Township MP Aden Duale.

The bid is being championed by MPs from President Uhuru Kenyatta's The National Alliance (TNA) party, with those from Deputy President William Ruto's United Republican Party (URP) having already vowed to stand by Duale.

Should the motion succeed, Duale, a vocal member of the Jubilee administration, may lose his position as Leader of Majority in the National Assembly. Tuesday, the defiant legislators (from TNA) issued a notice of the motion to discuss the conduct of Duale through Kanini Kega (Kieni), saying he had exposed the coalition to public ridicule.

The motion to be moved by Mr Kega will address seven key issues and seeks to put Duale on his defence over alleged failure to adhere to the high standards of leadership and accountability expected of State officers.

"Duale has failed in his capacity as Leader of Majority to keep within the requirements Article 10 and 73 of the Constitution and the Leadership and Integrity Act, which calls for holders of State offices to exercise high levels of responsibility and integrity," read part of the motion.

The MPs want the House to express its dissatisfaction with the conduct of Duale and thereafter impeach him.

The MPs have particularity taken issue with Duale's failure to make public the list of alleged Al Shabaab sympathisers and financiers, as he had promised following the Garissa College attack that saw 147 people perish, some from Nyeri County.

They also hit out at the Northern Kenya leadership for what they termed lack of commitment in the war against terror.

The lawmakers led by Kega, Priscilla Nyokabi (Nyeri woman representative) and Peter Weru (Mathira) had given Duale a one-week ultimatum to make the list public failure to which they would initiate a process to remove him from office.

They also lashed out at Duale over his claims on the British Broadcasting Corporation's Somalia Radio earlier in the year that Kenya was planning to hold negotiations with Al Shabaab. The claim was later refuted by the Interior ministry.

"Duale needs to give the House details of the proposed negotiations," stated Kega.

The filing of the motion comes in the wake of an an aborted meeting last week called by Deputy President William Ruto to prevail upon the MPs to 'go slow' on Duale.
