Kenya: Six senators have criticised MPs for calling for the dissolution of the Senate.

The senators termed the move by the MPs as insincere and disrespectful to the Constitution and the people of Kenya and will fight off such misplaced and futile attempts.

The senators Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo/Marakwet), Dr Wilfred Machage (Migori), Stephen Sang (Nandi), Peter Mositet (Kajiado) Agnes Zani and Liz Chelule both nominated accused the legislators of claiming they (senators) have no work and should be scrapped.

“If we are talking about sustainable ways of managing the huge wage bill, then the House with large numbers of representatives should be done away with,” said Mr Murkomen.

Mr Mositet said that senate oversees the affairs of the counties which MPs want to kill and urged local residents to be wary of such leaders.

“The senate has ensured that wananchi have a taste of leadership at the grassroots and the MPs are no happy about this since they are under governors at the county governments unlike before,” said Mositet.

Sang, while defending the Senate said since their election, they have been at the forefront fighting for the interests of wananchi.

“We shall not allow MPs to do things as they wish but must also acknowledge the fact we were chosen by wananchi with a clear constitutional mandate,” said Sang.
