Mudavadi: UDF will not rush into alliances

Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi says the United Democratic Front (UDF) party is in coalition talks with other parties, but will not rush into an alliance.

He reiterated that the party would only form an alliance with other parties based on convergence of policy.

“On coalition making, yes we are talking to other parties. But do not panic if you see leaders pose for a photo after meeting and I am not there. Coalition building is a process and not a single day photo event,” he said.

He added: “If you want me to pose for a photo whenever I meet other leaders for talks, we will do it so many times that some of the photos will be embarrassing at the end. In UDF we will discuss with other parties to a level of irreducible minimum based on our manifesto.”

Speaking on Tuesday evening during a Western Province professional and business community cocktail dinner in a Nairobi hotel, Mudavadi said UDF was among the top four ranked in membership registration indicating its strength.

“We are not a party of a region and do not seek that identity. We are spread throughout the country within the short time we have existed. Those who want to ignore us can only do so at their own peril,” he said.

The meeting is the first of a series aimed at establishing structures nationwide to propel Mudavadi’s bid.

The DPM said his supporters should not to be distracted by happenings on the political scene such as defections and alliance building meetings.
