Dr Winnie Wanjiku, a Nairobi-based psychologist, emphasises that parental pursuits can ignite curiosity in children. "When parents chase their dreams, children learn to value ambition and creativity. Mercy Murevu, a Nairobi-based accountant who transitioned into baking, is a shining example of pursuing one's passion. Driven by her lifelong passion for culinary arts, she opened a bakery that quickly became an exciting family endeavour. Initially observing her navigate the challenges of starting a business, her children are now involved, contributing to recipes, managing orders, and developing valuable teamwork skills. "My kids have developed a sense of ownership and creativity through helping at the bakery, something they may carry for life," Mercy says with pride. Another parent, Peter Kirui, balances a demanding work schedule with his passion for marathon running. No matter how hectic the week, he carves out time to train. His children often join him for shorter runs, picking up lessons about discipline and commitment as they enjoy life's simple pleasures. "I want my kids to see that even when life is busy, you can make time for what matters to you," Peter says. This principle extends beyond individual families. When parents thrive, their example often ripples into their communities, inspiring others to chase their aspirations. The late environmental activist and Nobel laureate Dr Wangari Maathai is a shining beacon. She exemplified the balance between thriving in her career and nurturing her family. While spearheading the Green Belt Movement and advocating for environmental sustainability, she raised her children with values of resilience and dedication. Her ability to juggle activism and motherhood left a legacy of perseverance and purpose. Agnes Juma and Daniel Katana from Kilifi County are parents to five children. The couple are beneficiaries of the National Positive Parenting Programme, an initiative supported by UNICEF. The project empowers parents to create safe and nurturing environments for their children. Agnes and Daniel have embraced the program's teachings, with Daniel actively participating in household responsibilities and parenting. "When there is a good relationship between mother and father, it's easier to find a solution whenever there is a problem," Daniel says. Michelle Obama, who gracefully balanced her role as First Lady with her passion for education and health, raised two daughters while leading initiatives like "Let's Move!" and penning her memoir, Becoming. Sachin Tendulkar, fondly known as the "God of Cricket," is celebrated as one of India's greatest athletes. Dr Wanjiku says, "Parents who follow their dreams are role models not just for their children, but everyone around them. It's a reminder that fulfilment is contagious."
