MP questions raised parking fees in city

By Peter Opiyo

A House committee has questioned the increased parking fees in Nairobi.

The Parliamentary Committee on Local Authorities raised concern over the unilateral decision by the Nairobi City Council to increase parking fees from Sh140 to Sh300.

Committee Chairman and Wajir North MP Hussein Gabow now wants Deputy Prime Minister and Local Government Minister Musalia Mudavadi to explain the increase.

Gabow said it was unfortunate the council increased the fees at a time its services to residents are wanting and parking lots have run out of space and most are dilapidated.

He termed the high fees a deterrent to do business in the city. The MP also wants the minister to explain what necessitated the increase, why the services are deteriorating and whether the same proposed fees would affect those on transit.
