Tears at requiem for 11 Migori accident victims

[Caleb Kingwara, Standard] The families of 11 people who perished in a grisly road accident along Migori-Isebania road on April 8 have called out to the county government to clear the road to prevent future accidents. This is as the county held a requiem mass for the departed souls led by Rt Rev Capt Reuben Katite. According to the families, the death of their loved ones met them with shock as the Migori-Isebania road keeps reminding them of the bad accident that happened. The families which requested for walkways to be cleared for pedestrians to use said their departed relatives had left behind young families which still needed support. "The parking is there and we have Matatus parking where pedestrians should be walking," the brother of George Omieno who died in the road crash said. Zachariah Asiago, the brother to the late Gideon Ogeti said his brother's body was lying at Ogembo Level Four Hospital's morgue in Kisii County after it was transferred from Migori County Referral Hospital's morgue. Asiago asked the county government to erect bumps on the Migori-Isebania road to avert future accidents. "We will live to remember the road because of what it had done to my brother Gideon. He has left a young family and his first child is in form one," Mr Asiago said. Ruben Lugali, the father of Margaret Adema, a woman who was thrown into River Migori by the truck said he was shocked when he received the news of his daughter's death. Lugali's daughter left behind five children. The requiem mass was held for the eight bodies. During the requiem mass, County Secretary Oscar Olima said they had brought in pathologists and asked residents to help in the identification of the bodies. "They are male adults who are middle aged," Olima said. Governor Ochilo Ayacko said despite the Migori-Isebania A1 road being a responsibility of the State, they would work together to ensure future road accidents are mitigated. He vowed to have all business people doing trade along the road relocated to alternative trading areas. Migori CEC for Environment and Disaster Management Rahab Robi condoled with the families and thanked them for agreeing to hold a joint requiem mass for their loved ones. "We thank the citizens and teh Red Cross for being with us during this hard time," Ms Robi said. The county spent Sh1 million in the requiem mass, clearance of mortuary bills and other burial expenses.v pril 9 according to Muslim customs.
