MP from Nyanza linked to illegal ethanol haul

Police are hunting for an MP from Nyanza suspected to be linked to contraband ethanol that was impounded while on transit from Kuria to Nairobi.

This came after the driver of the truck that was ferrying the 40 drums of the spirit used to produce alcohol was arraigned in a Naivasha court.

The truck was impounded last week by DCI officers from Naivasha at Subukia where the driver had diverted after learning that police were on his trail.

“We have identified that the ethanol and the truck belongs to the MP and we have gone to court seeking a warrant of arrest,” said a police source.

The officer added that efforts to get the MP to record a statement have been futile leaving them with no alternative, but to seek a court order.

The junior officer, who is not allowed to speak to the press, said this was not the first time that the lorry had been used to ferry ethanol and that it had been on the police radar for a long time.

“We have been trying to get the MP without any success,” said the officer.

Naivasha CID Boss Kennedy Njoroge said they wanted to question the MP about the cargo suspected to have been smuggled from Tanzania.
