The county government and the Kenya Red Cross Society have stepped up a campaign to reduce infant mortality by encouraging mothers to breastfeed their children optimally for six months.

Yesterday, 300 mothers from Nyalenda and Manyatta slums who had been trained on the same under the mother-to-mother support group initiative graduated after a six-month programme that prepared them to be breastfeeding ambassadors.

Mother-to-mother support group is one of the initiatives in the Integrated Family Health Project which is funded by the European Union and implemented by Red Cross. The group targets pregnant women in informal settlements in Kisumu.
