Nurse arrested for allegedly defiling epileptic girl seeking medication

Nurses are responsible for taking care of patients who seek medical care in their respective health facilities.

However, on Friday last week, the situation was allegedly turned into the contrary for one family in Kamser village, Rachuonyo North sub-county.

The family is calling for justice after their granddaughter suffering from epilepsy was allegedly defiled by a nurse at Ngeta dispensary.

The minor is said to have been defiled by the nurse she had always trusted, instead of being given drugs for suppressing epilepsy at the dispensary.

The incident began when the girl ran short of the drugs and was feeling unwell due to the epileptic condition, before her 62-year-old grandmother referred her to the health facility.

At the dispensary, she met the nurse in the treatment room who instructed her to proceed to the injections bed before locking the door, apparently to examine her.

"The nurse first locked my seven-year-old cousin who accompanied me to the dispensary in another room. He then instructed me to lie on the bed and defiled me for about five minutes and told me to leave," the girl told The Standard.

Traumatised, the girl complained she sustained injuries in her genitals, a situation that made her have difficulties walking.

"I am having sleepless nights since the incident because of the pain around my private parts," she said.

The nurse is said to have given the girl a three-day dosage of painkillers to relief the pain.

"He gave me two types of drugs, one was to be put in my genitals every night for three days while the other one was meant for my usual condition of epilepsy," she said.

It is the drug to be inserted in the genitals that raised an alarm from her grandmother, who reported the matter to Kendu Bay Police Station before they proceeded to Kendu sub-county hospital where a medical examination revealed the girl had been defiled.

"Epilepsy affects the brain but I was disturbed to hear my granddaughter had been given drugs for vaginal pain," said the grandmother.

She added: "I was again surprised when she told me the nurse had examined her by putting his genital organ into that of hers. This prompted me to seek a medical report from the hospital to establish what happened."

The grandmother noted that the girl started suffering from epilepsy when she was seven years old and had been taking drugs from Ngeta dispensary since eight months ago.

"The greatest challenge facing my family is how my granddaughter will get justice due lack of funds for sponsoring the case. I appeal for intervention from well-wishers to enable her get justice," she said.

Rachuonyo North OCPD Joseph Kisombe said the nurse had been arrested and was being held at Kendu Bay Police Station pending investigations.
