Wajir, Kenya: A senior administration police officer was on Saturday evening shot dead by unknown assailants in wajir town in yet another incident of insecurity in Northeastern  province.

senior sergeant Mohamed Mohamud was  ambushed at  7 30 pm along the wajir-Mandera road a few meters from the korahey mosque  as he was going back to his house after watching the 7 pm news bulletin at a local hotel.

Wajir East police boss James Mutungi while confirming the incident said that it was not clear what the motive of the attacker’s was.

He said that they were gathering  up information that would assist in apprehending the culprits.

The OCPD  said chances that the assailants must have traced the slain officer before pulling the trigger were high.

“This are people who knew him  very well and  decided to trail him, our preliminary investigation show that the attackers committed the act while inside a taxi before speeding off,” said Mutunga.

Mutunga said that the officer was off duty from his work station at the Eldas district administration police camp.

According to a junior administration police  officer based at the Eldas  administration police camp, the slain cop was on the fore front in fighting insecurity in the county .

“He was on the forefront in fighting crime and trying to make sure that al shabaab sympathizers don’t exists in our midst, he was really feared and known in the entire county  and the mere mention of his name made people tremble, am sure it is the same people who have killed him,” said  the officer.

The incident comes hot on the heels of a series of attacks that have been witnessed in various parts of the restive region with the latest attack occurring early this week when another police officer was among those killed in Mandera town when unknown assailants shot at them outside a canteen inside a police station.

Early this week president Uhuru Kenyatta read the riot act to senior police officers and county commissioners when he held a meeting with them. In the meting  uhuru told the security chiefs to make sure that sanity is restored in the county and more specifically in their areas off jurisdiction.
