Wimbledon tennis star Angella Okutoyi pleads for Sh1.4 million to save aunt in ICU

Kenya's tennis trailblazer Angella Okutoyi has issued a desperate public appeal for KSh1.4 million to clear an escalating ICU bill for her aunt, who has been fighting for her life at Radiant Hospital in Nairobi.

The 21-year-old tennis star took to with an emotional message.

"An update on my aunt, she remains critically ill at Radiant hospital ICU. We thank God she is showing small signs of improvement and we continue to trust God for her healing. The bill has reached KSh2 million. So far we have managed Sh600,000 and we are short of Sh1.4 million. Any contribution will be highly appreciated."

Her Aunt's condition was earlier highlighted in a local daily and reported that she suffers from Myasthenia Gravis, a rare autoimmune disorder that causes weakness and fatigue in the body's voluntary muscles.

The plea comes barely 24 hours after Okutoyi was celebrated by the Kenya Revenue Authority as the Top Micro Youth Taxpayer (Youth Category) during the national Taxpayers' Day on 20 November.

KRA publicly hailed the young athlete as "talented, determined and patriotic", highlighting her exemplary tax compliance.

Okutoyi's aunt, Cynthia Okutoyi, has been a pivotal figure in the young star's life and career. In an earlier interview Angella hailed the aunt as a source of inspiration, where she said despite her being sick, she went to cheer her up during Kenya's historic Billie Jean King Cup campaigns.

Just last week, Angella and her partner Francesca Pace won gold in the W35 Orlando women's doubles with a 2-1 victory over USA's Maribella Zamarripa and Allura Zamarripa.

In 2022, she became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title of any kind when she captured the Wimbledon girls' doubles crown with her partner Rose Marie Nijkamp.

She later won the women's singles gold medal at the 2023 African Games in Accra, becoming the first Kenyan woman to win the title in 46 years.
