Kalonzo, former DP vow to join hands, make Ruto a one-term president

[John Muia/Standard] Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua yesterday combed Matuu, Machakos and Mlolongo towns with ecstatic anti-government political rallies. This marked the second day of Ukambani political activation campaign where the two declared the Opposition will ensure President William Ruto will be a one-term president. Kalonzo and Gachagua, who were flanked by dozens of MPs, senators and MCAs drawn from various parts of the country, vowed the Opposition will focus on building a strong citizen movement that will culminate into a solid political outfit. This, they said, is what will send Ruto home in the first round. Chanting "Ruto, One Term" slogan, the leaders also declared Kenyans were ready to usher in a new leadership in 2027, and warned that there will be no room for rigging of the presidential vote as has been witnessed in the past elections. "I am not Raila (Odinga) who for several occasions cried foul that his election has been stolen. They will not steal my votes. They can do whatever they wish to do with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) but they should bear in mind that they will have nowhere to hide," Kalonzo declared. The Wiper leader said the Gen Zs, in their millions, will keep vigil at all polling centres to monitor the election results at the point of voting in order to eliminate the traditional vote fraud associated with transmission to the presidential vote-tallying centre. "Hear me Kenya. This time round, they will not steal the votes. Kenyans want an independent IEBC. I urge the nine million Gen Zs to apply for national identity cards and register as voters. We need 100,000 faithful youth that cannot be corrupted, to man our polling centres," said Kalonzo. The former Vice President declared June 25 as 'a holiday' to commemorate the persecution of Gen Zs who were brutalized during last year's anti-government demonstrations. "In order to ensure a new Kenya is birthed, we must have a country that is free from corruption, lies, oppression by State, killings and abductions. And I need Raila to answer me, because right now he has joined Ruto: Why did you forsake the Gen Zs? Why did you look the other way when the government descended to butcher the youth?" Kalonzo posed. Kalonzo also read the riot act to all elected leaders of Ukambani region who attended the recent State House meeting hosted by President Ruto. "I thank governors Wavinya Ndeti, Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and Julius Malombe for leading the way in snubbing Ruto's invitation to State House. Your action was a demonstration of your loyalty to the Kamba community," said Kalonzo. "Those who went to see Ruto, like the Speaker of the Machakos County Assembly, should leave for good. Any other leader who attended the meeting should not be voted for anywhere." Gachagua praised Kalonzo, noting MPs and senators allied to Wiper voted against his impeachment. "I must say that the Kamba community is a friend of the Mountain. Your MPs and senators stood with me through Kalonzo's guidance when President Ruto set out to embarrass me," said Gachagua. The former DP said the opposition will not be cowed or scattered by any State-sponsored scheme. "We have agreed with Kalonzo that we will, together, form the next government in 2027. We, in the opposition, are all in agreement that we have a common enemy, who is Ruto," he said. Former Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka also announced his return to Wiper party.
