Nyeri Governor fails to approve loans Bill

NYERI COUNTY: Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua is on a collision course with the county assembly after he failed to assent to the loans and mortgages Bill.

The Bill had proposed a Sh5 million loan for cars and mortgage for the Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

During a session, the House Speaker David Mwangi informed the MCAs that Gachagua had recommended some amendments to the Bill, which was hurriedly passed last month.

NO MONEY

The governor said there was no money set aside in the current financial year to facilitate the loans.

Some of the recommendations concerning the mortgages were that they set aside an amount for the fund in the 2014/2015 budget.

“We have now indicated how much will be set aside in the budget for the fund and we will table back the Bill in the assembly,” said Paul Ngiria, chairman of the Finance and Economic Planning Committee. The Bill proposes that each member is entitled to a Sh2 million car loan and mortgage of Sh3 million.

It also recommends that loans will be repaid at an interest of 3 per cent per year.
