Joseph Irungu, a murder suspect, has renewed his plea to be released on bail.

Irungu, alias Jowie, and who was journalist Jacqueline Maribe’s fiancé, is facing trial for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

He said his eight-month stay in custody since he was charged with the woman's murder was enough punishment, adding that there was no reason why he should continue being in remand while the case is going on.

His lawyer David Ayuo said Irungu’s family was willing to offer anything as security for his release and ensure he does not flee until the case is concluded.

“He has close ties with his family and relatives who have shown support and are determined to walk with him throughout the trial. There is no record he ever jumped bail, and no evidence he will endanger anyone's life,” said Mr Ayuo.

Irungu and Maribe were charged last October with the murder of Kimani at Lamuria Gardens Apartments in Kilimani on September 19, hours after she returned from South Sudan.
