Robbery suspects lynched in Nairobi

By Cyrus Ombati

Nairobi, Kenya: Two men were Monday night lynched in two separate robbery incidents in Nairobi.

One was lynched in Buruburu and the second in Ongata Rongai. Police say the suspects were mugging residents when an alarm was raised.

These are the latest incidents to happen in Nairobi in the last week.

Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said their statistics show up to four people are lynched in a week in the city, which he termed as alarming.

“Lynching of suspects is criminal and not allowed. Those who arrest suspects should hand them over to authorities,” he said.

He added the police saved a driver who tried to escape on foot after knocking down a police officer on Ngong Road Monday evening.

The driver had been flagged down by police at a roadblock but defied the orders to stop.

“He then drove past the officers, knocked down one of them before his vehicle rammed onto a pole and stalled. We arrested him and is going to face serious charges on court,” said Kibue.

He was arrested by members of the public as he tried to escape on foot before police arrived.

Elsewhere, a suspected thug was Monday night shot dead in a botched robbery at a shop in Korogocho slums, Nairobi.

The suspect was in the company of 20 others and they had tried to raid a container with electronic goods when police were alerted.

Police say the other men managed to escape in the confusion. The site where the container was belongs to a construction firm.

In Kasarani area, a man stabbed another to death in a quarrel over money. The assailant has been arrested and is helping police with investigations.

Cases of fatal domestic fights have been on the rise in the recent past.
