NAIROBI, KENYA: A 38-year-old Kenyan woman was Tuesday arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi while carrying six kilogrammes of heroin valued at Sh15.4 million.

The woman was headed to Lome, Togo when she was detained at the airport after her luggage was found with the drugs.

The plane she was travelling in was to pass through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia before heading to Togo, police said.

Head of CID at the airport Joseph Ngisa said the luggage was detected by his officers who were carrying out random checks.

“The drug had been wrapped in her travelling bag when it was discovered. She will be taken to court to face charges of drug possession and trafficking,” said Ngisa.

Police were trying to establish the origin of the drug and if there could be more of the same. Other officers were set to visit her Nairobi residence as part of efforts to make a breakthrough in the business.

Ngisa added police have intensified their operations on drug trafficking especially at the airport and warned they will arrest anyone who attempts to use the route.

Two Nigerians Emmanuel Okonkwo and Remigius Agabahia were last month arrested at JKIA with Sh5 million cocaine hidden in their private parts.

Police said they emitted 47 pellets of cocaine they had inserted in their private parts after they were intercepted on arrival on board a plane that originated from Brazil via Dubai

Police have intensified operations on traffickers in Kenya with more than 50 foreigners being deported over the offense.

Among them are 11 Nigerians including kingpin Anthony Chinedu whose deportation has led to the detention of 12 Kenyan security officials in Lagos for 12 days before being released.
