Ex-Mungiki leader charges dropped

By Wahome Thuku

Four police officers now want to withdraw their complaints of robbery with violence against former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga.

Damas Mutuku, Gregory Nzioka, Edwin Koech and Moses Mwangi are the complainants in the robbery case against Maina and four other suspects.

During a scuffle

The officers have written to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) requesting him to file an application to withdraw the case.

Maina was charged in April with violently robbing the officers of phones, ATM cards, pistols, personal documents and cash during a scuffle at his Hope International Church at Thome Estate, Nairobi on April 22.

He was charged together with Francis Mwangi, Daniel Wanjohi, Ngari Njogu and Stephen Kuria. They are also charged with unlawfully confining the officers at the church.

In the letter to the DPP, signed by the four, the officers say they had decided to withdraw the complaints in order to promote reconciliation.

“We have individually and collectively decided to withdraw all the complaints in respect of all charges in the case,” the letter reads in part.

Threatened or induced

The officers said they had not been threatened or induced by anyone to withdraw the charges.

Another complainant, Joseph Thuo, who claimed to have been robbed Sh100,000 has not signed letter.

Their application for withdrawal will however be subject to acceptance by the court
