A woman facing terrorism charges is still legally married to British terror suspect Jermaine Jhon Grant, a court was told.

Warda Breik Islam said although many men, including policemen, find her beautiful and have sought her hand in marriage, she has rejected their overtures because her marriage is still valid despite six years of separation from her husband.

Islam married Grant on December 18, 2011, according to an imam who solemnised their marriage at a mosque in Kisauni, Mombasa.

The imam, whose identity has been protected by the court, last week testified for the prosecution in the trial in which Mr Grant, Islam, and two others - Frank Ngala and fugitive Fuad Abubakar Manswab - are charged with several terrorism charges.

Grant, Islam, and Manswab were arrested at a house in Kisauni on December 19, a day after the purported wedding.

Ngala was arrested later after police found a cellphone previously used by Grant on him.

Grant is a convert to Islam who changed his name to Ali Mohamed Ibrahim in England in the early 2000s before fleeing to Somalia and East Africa, allegedly to fight jihad.

He has previously been linked to Al Shabaab.

The court has ruled that the State has proved its case against the suspects and ordered them them to defend themselves against the charges which include an alleged plot to bomb tourist resorts in Mombasa.

Police claim bomb-making chemicals and material were found on them when they were arrested.

Last Friday, Islam, who addressed the court in Kiswahili, told Senior Principal Magistrate Joyce Gandani that Grant married her after paying Sh50, 000 and furniture as dowry.

"Yes I wish to confirm that the marriage certificate being produced in court today and signed by me and Grant on December 19, 2011 is valid. I am his wife," she said when asked by the prosecution to state the status of the marriage.

Islam said she does not know the owners of the chemicals that have been linked to her by the State.

Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Jacob Ondari sought to know if she had another husband.

Islam said since the police separated her from Grant, three 'serious' men had approached her but she declined as she was still married to Grant.

"I do not know the owners of these chemicals. I only saw these chemicals in the dining room after the police spread them on the table and I do not know where they came from," she said.
