However, the topic of birth order occasionally crops up in social discussions. You've likely heard the common refrains: "Don't marry a firstborn; they're controlling," or "Avoid lastborns at all costs; they're spoiled and expect everything their own way." This might leave you wondering: Can your birth order truly determine the success of a relationship or marriage? Psychologists have long suggested that who you fall in love with and how harmonious that love becomes may be less random than we think. Beyond compatibility quizzes and temperaments, Birth Order Theory adds another surprising layer to the romantic equation. Are you a responsible firstborn married to a carefree lastborn? Or two middle children trying to compromise each other to death? Alfred Adler, a pioneering psychologist, proposed that the order in which we're born within our families profoundly shapes our personalities, our relational styles and even the way we express love. These deeply ingrained traits, formed in our earliest years, accompany us into adulthood and exert a subtle but powerful influence on our most intimate partnerships, particularly marriage. To understand these dynamics better, we spoke with Dr Violet Kiara, a clinical psychologist and family therapist. "Birth order provides a unique lens," Dr Kiara explained, "through which we can begin to understand the roles and patterns we develop within our families. These patterns often operate beneath our conscious awareness, influencing how we connect with and relate to our spouses." Susan, 42, is a bright and successful lawyer. As the firstborn daughter in her family, she learned the meaning of responsibility from a very young age. She was the one her siblings could always rely on, the high achiever and the one who naturally took charge. "I was always the one with the plan," she recalls. "Whether it was a school project or a family holiday, I was the one who made sure everything was organised and on track." This drive and dedication have served Susan well in her career, propelling her to professional success. However, she finds that these same qualities sometimes create friction in her marriage to David, who is a lastborn. Dr Kiara observes that this is a common dynamic in many relationships. "Firstborns often bring a strong sense of duty and a need for structure into a marriage," she says. "They are the planners, the organisers, and they tend to thrive when they feel a sense of control and order in their lives." Susan often feels like she is the responsible one in her relationship. "I love David's spontaneity and his ability to go with the flow," she says, "but sometimes I feel more like his mother than his wife. I'm always the one worrying about the bills, school fees, making the schedules and thinking about the future." Michael, a 36-year-old data analyst, grew up as an only child. When he married Emily, who came from a large, close-knit family, he found himself challenged by the constant negotiation and compromise that are inherent in shared living. "It's not that I don't love her deeply," he clarifies, "but I was used to doing things my own way. Sharing everything, from the bathroom to how we spent our weekends, required a significant adjustment for me." Only children, much like firstborns, often develop a strong sense of self-sufficiency and independence. "Growing up without siblings, only children learn very early on to rely on themselves," Dr Kiara explains. "They are often quite comfortable with their own company and can be very self-contained individuals. They simply haven't had the same childhood experiences with sibling rivalry or the need for collaboration that children with siblings have. As a result, they may need to consciously develop those skills in their marriage." So, what happens when individuals from different birth order positions come together in the context of marriage? Here's a closer look at some common pairings and the dynamics that often characterise them: Firstborn and Lastborn: This pairing, often described as the "golden pair," has the potential to be incredibly complementary. The firstborn typically provides structure, stability and a sense of direction, while the lastborn brings spontaneity, lightness, and a sense of fun to the relationship. However, challenges can arise if the firstborn becomes overly controlling or the lastborn is perceived as irresponsible or immature. As Dr Kiara notes, "The key to success in this pairing is maturity and mutual respect. The firstborn needs to be mindful of avoiding a parental role with their lastborn spouse, and the lastborn needs to step up and share responsibilities, demonstrating their commitment and reliability." Firstborn and Middle Child: This pairing can also work quite well, with the firstborn providing a sense of direction and the middle child offering emotional flexibility and a natural ability to mediate. Middle children, who often develop strong peacemaking skills within their families of origin, are typically adept at navigating different personalities and finding common ground. Dr Kiara cautions, "In this pairing, it's important for the firstborn to be mindful of not overshadowing the middle child's needs and opinions. The middle child, in turn, needs to learn to express their own needs clearly and directly, rather than falling into patterns of passivity or appeasement." Two Middle Children: A marriage between two middle children can be characterised by harmony and a strong desire for peace. Both partners are likely to be accommodating and easy-going. However, this pairing may sometimes lack decisiveness or a clear sense of direction. Both partners may tend to avoid conflict, which can, at times, lead to stagnation or a lack of forward momentum. "Couples in this pairing," advises Dr Kiara, "need to consciously cultivate initiative and direct communication. They need to learn to express their desires and opinions assertively and to develop the ability to make decisions together." Two Firstborns or Two Only Children: These pairings can be dynamic and productive, with both partners sharing a strong drive, a strong work ethic, and a desire to achieve. However, they can also be prone to power struggles and stubbornness, as both partners are accustomed to taking the lead and may find it difficult to yield control. "Couples in these pairings need to prioritise compromise and learn to yield to each other," says Dr Kiara. "They need to cultivate a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect, recognising that a successful partnership requires both partners to be willing to give and take." Two Lastborns: A pairing of two lastborns can be filled with fun, passion, and a sense of adventure. However, it may sometimes lack the grounding and stability needed for long-term commitment. With neither partner naturally inclined towards structure or long-term planning, there may be challenges with practical matters and a tendency to avoid difficult conversations. "In these relationships," Dr Kiara emphasises, "structure, whether it comes from within the couple or from external sources such as therapy, mentors, or supportive friends and family, is often crucial. These couples may benefit from developing routines, setting clear goals, and learning to manage responsibilities together." While birth order theory can offer valuable insights into the dynamics of marital relationships, it's essential to remember that it's just one piece of the complex puzzle of human connection. Dr Kiara stresses this point: "Birth order theory provides us with a helpful framework for understanding some of the patterns we bring into our relationships, but it certainly doesn't dictate our destinies. Ultimately, the most successful marriages are not determined by a specific birth order pairing but are built on a foundation of open communication, empathy, and a genuine willingness to grow together, both as individuals and as a couple!"
