On corruption, as Kenyans we must all bow our heads in shame

A Transparency International research which revealed that Kenya is one of the most corrupt countries in the world is most shocking. We should be ashamed as a country.

I have always known we are corrupt, but never thought we could make it to the top four in the whole world.

In fact, we have improved in matters corruption since last year.

I agree with the research that our Police department leads in corruption. Most officers especially the traffic officers love taking bribes and this is the reason why road accidents have escalated in the past few days.

In addition, the Government is reluctant to fight graft, making our country the most corrupt in East Africa.

In the past we have had many corruption cases which are still  pending in court. Although Goldenberg and Anglo-Leasing scandals cost Kenya billions of shillings, the main culprits are still walking free. It is only in Kenya where if you are monied, you can buy anything including votes and freedom in court.

We have a long way to go and if the Government does not intensify the battle to make Kenya a corruption free country, soon we will be ranked as the world’s most corrupt country.

Kenya again! It is so shameful for Kenya to be among the top five most corrupt countries in the world at number four and the most corrupt in East Africa.

Where are we headed to as a nation? Singapore is developed and with minimal corruption, yet about   30 years ago we were in the same economic league.

Watchdog role

The Judiciary and anti-corruption commission have failed the country in the fight against corruption as culprits are set free without paying for their corrupt deeds. No one has faced jail term or been made to pay back whatever s/he stole.

On the other hand, media have not performed their watchdog role well as they do not highlight much about corruption and its impact on the economy.

The traffic police department has been the most notorious when it comes to graft and allows unroadworthy vehicles to continue operating on our roads.

Kenyans must understand that this monster is killing our nation and economy and say a big NO to all forms of corruption.

News that Kenya is among the most corrupt countries in the world is most saddening.

Notably the Transparency International report comes barely two weeks after Kenya was ranked among the world’s failed states.

We should be concerned and must urgently put our heads together to moot ways of ending this pandemic.

The survey, which was conducted in 95 countries, reveals that one person out of four paid a bribe to a public body in the last year. Seven out of nine countries with the highest incidence of bribery rate were in sub-Saharan Africa.
