Let’s not smile yet over new Aids cure

The report that researchers are on the brink of discovering a cure of the dreaded HIV/Aids pandemic — including bone marrow operation — should be welcomed cautiously.

Most researchers are funded by pharmaceutical firms and the industry will never be interested in treating a disease — which is their source of profits.

Thus the world would not trust a cure discovered by an independent researcher.

The discovery is good news but let’s be cautious of the consequences — one out of three people will never survive the said operation. Besides, it is unaffordable for 99.9 per cent of the world population living with the virus. Let the discovery not be a false hope.

The pandemic has created wealth and misery in equal measure. Think of the UN, NGO and Government agencies, researchers, pharmaceutical firms companies and staff who will lose jobs if an Aids cure is finally discovered — it is a double-edged sword to world economies.
