Horses and players converge at Nairobi Polo Club

Horses and players of all ages converge at the Nairobi Polo Club at Jamhuri Park for a three-day polo competition, which starts this afternoon.

Up to 48 junior, intermediate and senior players will battle it out for the prestigious trophies in a tournament spilling to next weekend, which will be sponsored by Signon Freight.

The seniors will be competing for The Horseman Trophy and Boots N All Trophy for Most Valuable Player. The Intermediates will have The Welby Cup at stake and the juniors have the LST Challenge Cup to fight for.

Little Governors and Sting open the mouth-watering polo competition at 1pm, to be umpired by Kigen Moi and Mike Du Toit. Devin Shretta will be the referee.

The second match will be at 2pm between KPS and Governors with Ashe Ahluwalia and Phylippa Marrion umpiring and Pete Griffiths as the referee.

Quantam leap

High Ratio and Technology Today will follow at 3pm with Quentin Savage and Craig Millar as umpires and Jonathan Stichbury the referee. Wann feeds take on Tack rack at 4pm (umpires Tarquin Gross and Philou Salle, referee Rowena Gross), while the last match today will feature Quantum Leap and Ultimate Security, umpired by Julian Camm and Brian Perry and Phillip Arungah as the referee.

Quantum Leap and Ultimate Security have some of the country’s top players with the former fielding handicap 2.5 Philou Salle, Phillip Arungah (1.5), Raphael Nzomo (0.5) and Dominic Grammaticas (0.5). Tarquin Gross (2.5), Gordon Murray (1.5), Tiva Gross (0.5) and Johathan Stichbury (0.5) will play for Ultimate Security. Wann Feeds and Tack Rack also have highly-rated players, with Julian Camm (2), Quentin Savage (1), Gideon Moi (0.5) and Adam Delorie in Wann Feeds and Craig Millar (2), Peter Griffiths (2), Kimoi Moi (0.5) and Archie Voorspuy in the Tack Rack team.

Leading team

Leading the Little Governors team against Sting is handicap 2 Peter Griffiths. In his team are Milo McConnell (-1), Lydia Craig (-1.5) and Rob Macaire (-2). Sting have handicap 1.5 Johnson Asenga and Sammy Kiarie (-1), Leigh Stubblefield (-1.5) and Josephine Bauer/Luciano Mosele (-1.5).

In KPS team are Sam Mattock (0.5), Dominic Thoenes (0), Mike Du Toit (-0.5) and Louise Wood (-1). Govers will parade Kigen Moi (0), Jojo Barlow (0), Joss Craig (-0.5) and Imogen Voorspuy (-1). High Ratio will have Ashe Ahluwalia (0), Brian Perry (0), Chris Foot (-0.5) and Amber Ahluwalia (-1). Technology Today have Phylippa Marrion (0), Emma Beardshaw (0), Aisha Gross (0.5) and Devin Shretta (-1).
