How the women nominated senators performed

Five of the 16 women nominated as senators in the 2013 election managed to clinch various elective seats in the August 8 polls.

Janet Ong'era, who was Orange Democratic Movement's (ODM) nominated senator, vied for the woman representative position in Kisii County and won with 169,377 votes. Her closest rival was Aburi Dorice from Jubilee Party who garnered 143,007 votes.

Chelule Liza, nominated by United Republican Party (URP) in 2013, also clinched the Nakuru County woman rep seat on a Jubilee ticket after getting 493,940 votes. Independent candidate Agnes Githinji came in second with 107,197 votes.

Naisula Lesuuda, formerly nominated by The National Alliance (TNA), won the Samburu West parliamentary seat via Kanu as Martha Wangari, nominated by UDF, vied for the Gilgil parliamentary seat and won.

Dullo Fatuma Adam, nominated to the Senate by URP, also won the Isiolo Senate seat through the Party of Reforms and Development with 14,706 votes.

Those who lost the various seats include Beatrice Elachi, who vied for the Dagoretti North MP seat on a Jubilee Party ticket but lost to ODM's Simba Arati, and Elizabeth Ongoro, who vied on an Amani National Congress ticket but lost to Tom Kajwang' of ODM for the Ruaraka parliamentary seat.

Emma Mbura Getrude also lost the Rabai parliamentary seat on a Maendeleo Chap Chap party ticket. Joy Gwendo, nominated to the Senate through TNA, lost the Kisumu East parliamentary seat on a Jubilee ticket.

Jubilee's nominated Senator Beth Mugo and ODM Secretary General Agnes Zani are among the big names guaranteed second-time Senate nominations.

Kanu nominated Senator Zipporah Kittony said she was retiring from active politics.
