MPs allege disparities in Central Bank of Kenya report, statements

KENYA: Glaring discrepancies have been found in the Central Bank of Kenya’s report and financial statements of 2010, the chairman of a parliamentary committee has said.

The Public Investments Committee chairman Adan Keynan directed that the report be handed over to the Auditor General who will then share his findings with the committee.

The report in question, he further stated, failed to indicate ownership as it had no signatures or names appended to it.

CBK appeared before the PIC to submit its annual financial reports since the year 2000/2001 for review.

CBK Deputy Governor Dr Haron Sirma told the committee that the bank appointed its own auditors with the approval of the Ministry of Finance.

“This was consistent with the CBK Act. It’s only in the year 2012/2013 that we approached the Auditor General’s office in compliance with the Constitution,” he stated.

It emerged that CBK has previously used the services of KPMG. Ms Nancy Mukiri of the office of the Auditor General told the committee that she couldn’t comment on records before 2013 as the audits were conducted by a private company. “We cannot comment on the accounts as the audits were done by a private auditor sourced by the bank,” she said.
