Kabando wants Kimunya, Nyong’o sacked

Sports Assistant minister Kabando wa Kabando has challenged President Kibaki to secure his legacy by getting rid of people who are tarnishing the image of the Grand Coalition Government.

Mr Kabando called for immediate sacking of Transport Minister Amos Kimunya over the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) appointments, which he described as “untenable and indefensible”.

“Insensitivity and recklessness of Government officials bring shame and dishonour to innocent communities and disrepute to the offices they hold,” Kabando said in a statement.

He also called for the sacking of Medical Services Minister Anyang’ Nyong’o over the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) saga.

On the KPA appointments, the assistant minister said: “The non-institutional “appointees” should, in spirit of national interest, reject the offer or Mr Kimunya should show humility, revoke and review the appointments immediately.”

“If the President and the PM fail to act, then Kenyans are entitled to conclude that it’s a coalition of impunity and theft,” he said.

There has been uproar over the KPA appointments by Kimunya and the matter has moved to court.

Prof Nyong’o has also been under pressure to step aside over the NHIF saga that has seen the entire board suspended to pave way for investigation.

Separately, Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni warned that the emergence of tribal political parties was a threat to national unity.

Speaking in Nyeri yesterday, Mr Kioni said it was unfortunate that political parties were being formed with the aim of appeasing different tribal blocs.

“The trend is worrying that certain communities are identifying with some exclusive political parties. What happens to those communities that have not registered a political party,” posed the MP. At the same time, Kioni claimed that politicians eyeing governorship were opposed to the deployment of County Commissioners.

He claimed that the politicians feel their influence would be watered down once the County Commissioners are deployed.

“It is the MPs who are eyeing this county seats who are against these commissioners. We need not to personalise the debate,” said Kioni.

Defending the appointments by President Kibaki, Kioni said the furore they had generated was unnecessary as most of the individuals were being promoted to new positions.

“We need to respect institutions, the Provincial Administration is under the Office of the President who made the appointments,” said Kioni.
