Rift Valley Zone dominated netball winning both men and women’s titles in Kenya Teachers Colleges Sports Association (KTCSA) Championships.

Tambach defeated Migori 27-23 in an equally contested women netball final to retain the trophy they won at Eregi last year.

Kericho successfully defended men’s trophy after they edged out Migori 28-17 in the final played at Meru Teachers College on Thursday.

It was a site to behold as Tambach and Kericho supporters joined the triumphant teams in celebrations amid song and dance.

In men’s hockey, Shanzu beat Kilimambogo 4-1 on post match flicks after a 1-1 deadlock in regular and extra time to reach the final.

The match that was expected to be free flowing was never to be as players struggled and manoeuvred their way through the muddy pitch at the main games venue. Shanzu scored its spot hits through Caleb Kimani, Evans Odhiambo, Charles Otieno and Zachariah Mwanzana while Ali Mohammed missed the target.

Poor set pieces

Kilimambogo showed inefficiency in set pieces as they managed just one goal through Kenneth Savali while Joakim Luseka, James Ikua, Jonah Makau and Ezrah Agutu all wasted their flicks. Most hockey matches are won through set pieces including penalty corners and flicks meaning.

Migori piped Moi Baringo 1-0 in the other semi-final encounter to set a final date with Shanzu. Meru and Asumbi are the women’s finalists.

In men’s football, Hitler Juma snatched a brace to help Asumbi beat Egoji 3-0 and reach the final. Oscar Kambona put Asumbi in the lead when he scored the match opener in the 14th minute before Juma added two more goals converting in the 14th and 70th minute.

International Teaching and Training Centre eliminated Kaimosi 2-0 in the second semi-final at Kaaga High to come face to face with Asumbi in final.

Century score

In men’s basketball, Asumbi managed a century score when they whitewashed Baringo 100-49 in their semi-final encounter while Shanzu hit Kigari 79-49 to reach the final. It was a walk in the park for Asumbi who led 45-19 at half time before breaking off to add 34 more goals against their opponents 20 to win the match and advance to the final.

In women’s basketball, Kilimambogo eliminated Kaimosi 50-33 while Asumbi recorded a 66-19 victory over Egoji to qualify for the final.

In men’s volleyball, Thogoto displayed a spirited fight to see off Kamwenja 3-1 (22-25, 25-9, 25-18, 25-20) in a four set thriller and qualify for the final.

Shanzu overpowered Egoji 3-2 in a pulsating five setter to set a final date with Thogoto. Eregi and Kigari reached women’s final.

The ball games championships brought together teachers colleges from all zones namely, Nairobi, Central, Nyanza, Coast, Eastern, Rift Valley and Western.

The games aim to identify and nurture talent.
