More pain as price of salt goes up

National

The price of salt is set to increase from tomorrow, April 15 as indicated in a memo by a salt manufacturing company in Mombasa.

In a circular dated March 31, Kensalt announced to its consumers that the price of salt would increase due to an increase in input commodities.

"We wish to inform you that due to a continuous rise in the cost of production, we have been forced to increase our prices by Sh1000 per ton plus Value Added Tax with effect from April 15, 2023," Kensalt Limited said in a statement.

The company further noted that the increase in price was necessary in order to keep supplying its customers.

"We have to increase the price due to the increase in the price of the input commodities used in manufacturing."

An increase in price per ton by Sh1000 means the prices of lower amounts of salt will also go up.

Currently, the price of one kilogram of salt is retailing between Sh30 to Sh35 in supermarkets and at local shops.

Following the notice by the largest salt manufacturer, netizens reacted to the changes relating to the current cost of living in the country.

"Even Kensalt is raising prices," one Twitter user wrote.

Another user going by Wanjiru commented: "We have to accept that the cost of production is too high in Kenya."

Salt is the only household commodity that has experienced a zero per cent cost rise over the years.

As consumers feel the pinch of the hike in the cost of basic commodities, now salt joins the bandwagon.

According to the latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, Kenya's inflation rate in March remained constant at 9.2 percent.
