Nominated MP Sulekha Harun has lauded the launch of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program saying it is timely in providing quality healthcare for all.
Speaking during a free medical camp conducted at Mandera County Referral Hospital in partnership with the Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Professionals, Sulekha said quality and affordable healthcare is the backbone of a prosperous community.
"The demand for healthcare services is substantial, and while this camp won't be able to cover all the needs, it's certainly making a significant impact on critical cases for our people. In line with the principles of universal healthcare coverage, the plan is to continue working together to organize more such medical camps,” said Sulekha.
Sulekha said her office remains committed to ensuring that every individual in the community has access to quality healthcare.
“This is important for those who cannot afford the costs of surgeries and specialized medical attention. The commitment to improving access to healthcare services for the people is evident, and I look forward to more initiatives like this in the future," said Sulekha.
At least 30 dedicated senior specialists conducted free medical check-ups, and consultation services in cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, urology, Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) services, and eye care (Ophthalmology), among others. The team was supported by an additional group comprising general doctors, clinical officers, and nurses.
According to the Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Professionals president Dr. Ahmed Twahir, the camp was a success but there is a need for more specialists considering the huge turnout.
"We had a very successful one-of-a-kind medical camp in Mandera, at Mandera County Referral Hospital. The highlight was the three craniotomies that were carried out by our Neurosurgeon Dr. A. Khalif. There is a serious need for a dermatologist and an ENT surgeon as shown by the huge turnout of patients seeking those services," said Twahir.
