Yesterday, BAFTA Film Awards nominations were officially revealed, and excitement is brewing in the film industry.
The BAFTA Awards, presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, are widely regarded as one of the most prestigious honours in the film industry.
The official awards will be held on Sunday, 16 February, at London’s Southbank Centre.
“Conclave” and “Emilia Pérez” lead this year’s nominations, heading up a diverse mix of talent and titles in a competition where, for the first time in years, there’s no clear favourite in any of the major categories.
This year's ceremony promises to be a thrilling affair, with several hotly contested categories and a strong possibility of a first-time winner taking home the coveted Best Actress award.
Pop superstars turned actresses Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande both received nominations for their supporting roles in Emilia Pérez and Wicked. In the same category, Felicity Jones delivers a powerful performance in The Brutalist, while Jamie Lee Curtis brings her signature blend of strength and vulnerability to The Last Showgirl. Isabella Rossellini also received a nod for her nuanced portrayal in Conclave.
In the Leading Actor category, this year boasts a formidable lineup featuring a cocktail of talents. Adrien Brody, known for his intense portrayals, is nominated for his role in The Brutalist. He faces stiff competition from Timothée Chalamet, who delivers another enigmatic performance in A Complete Unknown. Colman Domingo adds to the mix with his captivating work in Sing Sing, while Ralph Fiennes brings his commanding presence to his role in Conclave. Sebastian Stan also shines in his portrayal in The Apprentice, while Hugh Grant rounds out the impressive list with his nuanced performance in Heretic.
This year's Best Actress race is shaping up to be a true nail-biter, with seasoned veterans like Demi Moore, the 62-year-old actress who just won a Golden Globe for her role in The Substance, going head-to-head with Mikey Madison for Anora and Karla Sofia Gascon for Emilia Pérez, among others. The Substance earned Moore a nod in this category as well.
The Outstanding British Film category celebrates the best films produced in the past year. Last year's winner, The Zone of Interest, set a high bar, and this year's contenders will need to bring their A-game.
Nominations for Bird, directed by Andrea Arnold, will go head-to-head against Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, and Blitz, directed by Steve McQueen, among others. This category boasts the most nominations, with a whopping ten films competing.
