Fifteen Kenyan university students who returned home last Saturday from Sudan have tested positive for Covid-19.
On Saturday, 129 students studying in various universities in Sudan arrived in Kenya on a discounted Kenya Airways flight after arrangements by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir. Of these, 87 disembarked in Mombasa while another 42 terminated their journey in Nairobi.
They had been stranded in Sudan since the suspension of international flights in March as the virus spread across the world.
Yesterday Mombasa County Director of Public Health Dr Salma Swaleh Mohamed said the students were tested last Sunday, a few hours after they landed at the Moi International Airport on a special charter operated by Kenya Airways. “We embarked on carrying out tests for students who landed in Mombasa numbering 87 and 15 turned out positive,” she said.
Mohamed said that 72 of the students who were prime contacts of those who turned positive remain in isolation and are awaiting further tests this coming Sunday.
“They were all first taken to the Kenya School of Government, which is one of the designated quarantine centres in Mombasa. Those who tested positive have been admitted at the Technical University of Mombasa, which has a special 300-bed capacity facility to handle Covid-19 patients,” she said.
A parent who was involved in plans to repatriate the students, Zena Rubeya Ali said they had been notified about the test results and the affected were under care.
“We remain grateful to leaders including Mvita MP, Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, who was at the forefront in ensuring students fly back home from Sudan,” she said. Nassir lauded efforts by leaders who made the repatriation flight possible.
