Nairobi, Kenya: The High Court has stopped a Sh50 million tender for supply of safety products for persons living with albinism.
High Court judge Weldon Korir issued the order following an application by a lobby group Albinism Society of Kenya.
The society filed a petition at the High Court Tuesday also challenging the ongoing census of persons living with albinism. They want the census at the district level stopped and conducted at the location.
The society, through its convener Mr Isaac Mwaura who is also an ODM nominated MP, stopped the tender allocated to a local firm Sunken International, for supply of sunscreen and protective lotions pending the hearing of the case.
They claim the tender had been awarded by National Council for Persons with Disabilities irregularly and before the population of its members had been ascertained. The census started at district headquarters last Monday and is set to end on Friday.
The council advertised the tender in March and closed it on March 14.
It was awarded to Sunken International on June 22.
The society sued the Council, the Attorney General and Sunken International, claiming they had violated constitutional requirements for transparency in the transaction.
The judge declined to stop the census and ordered that the parties go before him on Monday.
