Bad roads add pain to hospital patients

By Antony Gitonga

Nakuru, Kenya: Operations in AIC Kijabe Hospital could be grounded due to the poor state of roads leading to the facility.

The hospital’s woes started two months ago after a bridge on one of the main roads from the Mai Mahiu-Nairobi highway, which is used to ferry supplies, collapsed.

The other road from the Nairobi-Nakuru highway is facing similar predicament and the hospital management has raised the red flag as lives of tens of patients are in great danger.

Delivery of medical supplies and arrival of patients mainly those involved in road accidents have been adversely affected. This could spell doom for more than 120,000 patients who get treatment at the facility annually that is ranked second after Kenyatta National Hospital with 10,000 surgeries every year.

A visit to the facility in Kiambu County established that patients seeking treatment had a hard time accessing it due to the bad state of the roads. According to the hospital CEO Mary Muchendu, two projects worth over Sh200 million had stalled as contractors could not deliver building materials.

“The construction of a paediatric ward with a bed capacity of 80 and a TB and HIV centre have stalled despite being fully funded as it’s impossible to get construction materials to the site,” she said.

Ms Muchendu warned that if machines broke down, the lives of patients would be in danger.
