Maina, man to beat at Nyali golf course: Mombasa's golfer destroys field to win Captain's title

Mombasa Golf Club’s Peter Maina returned an excellent 35 differential points to win the 2015 Captain’s (Thusara De Silva) golf tournament at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club over the weekend.

The two-day tournament organised to bid farewell to the outgoing 2015 Nyali Golf Captain Thusara De Silva, attracted 120 golfers and was sponsored by Habari Insurance Brokers, Lantana Lifestyles, East African Breweries, AAR Health Care, a Mombasa-based golfer Symon Wambugu and friends of the Captain.

Playing off handicap 15, Maina posted 73 nett on the first day of the tournament and added 38 points on the second to lift the trophy.

On the second day, Maina rolled nine level pars and played mixed bogey shots on the rest of the 18 holes in both nines to place him on top of the leader board.

“I played with great skill and the course was in an excellent condition. Thank you all,” said Maina.

Handicap 19 Zafar Imtiaz finished second on a point difference after playing 75 nett on Saturday and 39 points on Sunday.

Handicap 14 Martin Ombura scored 78 nett and 40 points for a differential count back score of 38 points for a third-place finish after tying on points with fourth-placed handicap 18, Jyoti Doshi.

Lawyer Gabriel Gakuo, who was playing off handicap 15, won on Saturday with a 69 nett score, while handicap 25 D.J. Maru claimed honours on Sunday with 40 points.

Handicap 3 Gurbux Singh, who was the club’s captain in 2012, got 43 differential points after playing 76 nett on Saturday and 33 points on Sunday to win the Best Past Captain Prize.

Handicap 7 Eric Nyongesa won the Best Captain prize after posting 75 nett on Saturday and 31 points on Sunday for 44 differential points.

Lilian Krijnen, on 37 points, was the lady winner, while Teresia Odoo on a count back score of 35 points was second after tying on the same score as third-placed Nila Devani.

Handicap 22 Alan Marshall on 50 differential points (80-30) won the Senior Prize, while handicap 11 Duncan Githere won the Junior Prize.
