Okwemba: seize Gor’s poor run

Former Kenyan international Charles Okwemba has challenged FKF Premier League teams to take advantage of Gor Mahia’s struggles and wrestle the title from them.

The record Kenyan champions have dominated the local scene in recent years claiming seven titles in the last eight seasons.

But with the eighth-placed K’ogalo currently going through a rough patch that has seen them garner only 19 points from 13 matches, Okwemba has urged his former clubs led by Tusker, AFC Leopards and KCB to win this year’s championship.

Tusker are leading the table with 35 points, six ahead of KCB while AFC Leopards are third with 28 points.

“Teams have not been turning up in the last few seasons making it so easy for Gor Mahia to win the titles. But current Gor Mahia’s struggles give other teams an opportunity to end their dominance,” Okwemba, who retired in 2018, said.

“Based on what is happening at Gor Mahia, it would be very disappointing if they win the league again this season. We need to have a competitive league and not a predetermined league."

He continued: “Though it is still too early to call, I feel Tusker, AFC Leopards and KCB have positioned themselves better for this season’s title. But I will strongly consider them as favorites if only they maintain their form until their first five matches into the second leg.

“There are debates that Gor Mahia have always been assisted to win the league but I think they deservedly won them due to the quality they had."
