Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he would've carried on as Manchester United manager if circumstances had allowed him to.

The legendary Scot called time on his management career in 2013 after a sensational 26 years at Old Trafford.

In that time he won 38 trophies and wrote himself into the history books as one of the finest football managers of all time.

And Ferguson now says he had no plans to retire - but the death of somebody very close to him and his family meant he had to hang his hairdryer up.

Ferguson's mind was made up when Bridget Robertson, the sister of Ferguson's wife Cathy, died in October 2012.

“I definitely would have carried on," Ferguson told the Telegraph. “I saw she [Cathy] was watching television one night, and she looked up at the ceiling. I knew she was isolated. Her and Bridget were twins, you know?”

"When I told her this time I was going to retire she had no objection whatsoever [she persuaded him otherwise in 2002]. I knew she wanted me to do it.”
