AFC’S final hunt for Sh2.6m: Leopards play Victoria University in Nile Basin Cup finals today

AFC Leopards play Victoria University of Uganda in the final match of the Nile Basin tournament today in Khartoum.

The Kenyan club edged out Rwandese side Academie Tchite 2-0 in one of the semi-final matches played on Tuesday to make it to the final of the event.

Leopards won the match despite being reduced to nine men after Noah Wafula and Bernard Mangoli were sent off for rough play.

Ugandan national Musa Mudde opened the scores for Leopards in the 58th minute before Mike Khamati ensured victory for the Kenyan side with a 75th minute goal.

The win means that Leopards have picked maximum points in four matches and will be highly motivated going into the weekend derby against arch-rivals Gor Mahia on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium.

But first Leopards must overcome Victoria University from Uganda in the final of the Nile Basin tournament to be played tonight in Khartoum.

Victoria University edged out Al Shandy from Sudan 1-0 in the other semi-final match played on Tuesday. Muzamir Mutyaba scored the only goal for Victoria University in the 78th minute.

Should Leopards win today, they will return home Sh2.6 million richer. By reaching the final, the club is already assured of Sh1.7 million. The third placed team will pocket Sh877,000.

This is the first time that this tournament is being held by Council for East and Central Africa Football Association  and is meant for cup winners in the region.

It comes two months before the club championships which will be held in Rwanda this year.

El-Mereikh offer Sh17m for Wanga

striker Allan Wanga

Elsewhere, Sudanese club El-Mereikh have offered AFC Leopards an impressive Sh17million for the signature of top striker Allan Wanga.

Wanga (pictured) has been on the radar of various clubs over the last several months with at least two South African sides having expressed serious interest in signing the player.

However, the Sudanese giants seems to have beaten all opposition by their offer which made AFC Leopards chairman Allan Kasavuli to travel with the player to Khartoum on Monday afternoon.

According to Wanga, Leopards and El-Mereikh have already agreed and what remains is for him to negotiate his personal terms after which he would undergo medicals on Tuesday.

“The two clubs have an agreement. Now it is my turn to discuss personal terms after which I will undergo the required medicals,” revealed Wanga in an interview.

Leopards will make a huge profit by selling the player who cost them less than Sh2 million when he was signed from Vietnam two years ago.

The Kenyan club seem to have done good business as well considering that Wanga was remaining with less than six months before his contract runs out in October and had Leopards delayed, he would have walked out for free.

South African giants SuperSport are reported to have offered Leopards Sh4 million for the signature of Wanga.

Bidvest is another South African club that had shown interest in the player.
