NYANDARUA, KENYA: Horticultural farmers in Nyandarua will have a reason to smile after completion of a multi-million pack house which is at its final stages in Ol Kalou. The Sh140 million house will see farmers store their perishable goods. Already, over 80 per cent of the construction is complete, according to Agriculture executive committee member Agatha Thuo. She said that once the project is complete,it will ensure that the perishable farm products are stored and also packed before being transported to the market both locally and abroad. She said that losses incurred by farmers when their farm produce rots in farms will now be a thing of the past. "Nyandarua is renowned for its horticultural produce. Every year, some 30,000 hectares are put under various crops giving us over 500,000 tonnes of horticultural produce per annum. Things will now change for the better," she said. Thuo said horticultural sector supported over 100,000 farmers in the county and generated Sh5.5 billion annually adding that it was the third most important sector after potatoes and dairy.
