Ask any upcoming female advocate in Kenya who their role model is and I can guarantee you that Njoki Ndung'u's name will be top of the answers you get. Her career track is enviable and her accomplishments make her one of the most successful women lawyers in Kenya.

Born on September 20, 1965, Njoki Susanna Ndung'u has risen through the ranks of the Kenyan legal fraternity to now sit as one of the Supreme Court of Kenya judges having started at the office of the Attorney General as a State Counsel.

Ms Njoki Ndung'u is an alumni of the reputable Kenya High School. After her high school studies, the young Njoki joined the Valley Secretarial College where she took a secretarial course. Njoki headed the call to the noble legal profession by joining the University of Nairobi to study law and later on a Master of Law in Human Rights and Civil Liberties from the University of Leicester England. The accomplished advocate also holds a Diploma in Women's Human Rights from the World University Services Austria.

Njoki has many accomplishments to her name, she is the architect of the Sexual Offences Act. She also contributed to the amendments of the Employment Act providing for paid paternity and maternity leave and also amendments to the Political Parties Act (2007) which amendments introduced affirmative measures for women's political participation.

Ms Njoki is a former member of the Pan African parliament and also a former nominated MP in Kenya in the National Rainbow Coalition. Njoki sat as a member of the committee of experts that drafted the Constitution and was named UN person of the year in 2006, the jurist of the year award 2006 and the presidential elder of the burning spear (EBS) in the same year.

Her career includes experience at the Attorney General's Office as State Counsel, Programme Officer at the Institute for Education in Democracy, and National Protection Officer at the UNHCR. At 51 Njoki shows no sign of stopping, her legal career is just beginning to shine brighter than before. The mother of one is truly a woman of substance, a role model to many.
