Right from its creation in Berlin as Leopold's personal property, Congo remains a geopolitical perplexity. Its immense territorial size and natural wealth, estimated at more than $25 trillion, is of strategic interest to competing imperial powers.
This makes Congo contrived chaos as extra-continental exploiters seek to deny that wealth to each other. Since the chaos affects neighbours there have been many attempts in postcolonial times to rectify the state.
To safeguard its own interests, post-colonial Kenya finds itself at the forefront of attempts to promote peace in the Great Lakes region partly because it feels the pinch of instability in Congo.
