Suffering from eczema? Soda ash could be the solution

Skin Care

Soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate, washing soda, magadi soda or soda crystals, is a chemical that is refined from the mineral trona. It is used in glass manufacturing, in household detergents, as a water softener, in paper products, as an air cleaner and in food products. Many households in Kenya would use soda ash in cooking to soften traditional vegetables, or when soaking lentils to remove any gas or toxins.

It is highly alkaline, and very safe to use when diluted. Most of the soda ash in Kenya is obtained from Magadi. In my village at the coast, natural soda ash is widely available and therefore widely used.

Skin softener: Due to its pH, it helps to soften skin. You can use it as a foot bath to soften cracked heels, and you can put it in your bath tub and soak for all round baby-soft skin.

Clears eczema: In it’s natural state, this powder works like a mineral salt and smoothes skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Moisturises dry or scaly skin conditions: It helps skin retain moisture and makes it easier to absorb natural oils.

You can make a skin toner or spray using natural soda ash and water. It is highly concentrated therefore you only need a small amount. Do not use processed soda ash on your body as it may irritate your skin. As with all new things, ensure that you perform a patch test and avoid the eye-area.

Step 1 - Mix

Mix half a teaspoon of soda ash with half a cup of plain water. Use boiled or distilled water and store in the fridge.

Step 2 - Bottle

Stir the mixture and pour into a storage or spray bottle.

Step 3 - Use

Use as a skin toner or spray on problem skin. Seal with a moisturiser afterwards. Have you used this on your skin? What is your experience?
